A census of governments is taken at 5-year intervals as required by law under Title 13, United States Code, Section 161. This 2002 census, similar to those taken since 1957, covers three major subject fields: government organization, public employment, and government finances. This report provides a comprehensive summary of census findings on government employment and payrolls for March 2002. National and state-by-state data are shown for the federal government, state governments, and local governments by type of government. Additional data are provided on local governments by county area and by size groups.
