Response of the Northern Hemisphere Atmospheric Circulation to an Enhanced Greenhouse Gas Forcing

The response of the atmospheric circulation to an enhanced radioactive greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing is investigated. An earlier study of the Southern Hemisphere response showed that changes in the spatial patterns of the leading modes of variability are associated with changes in the propagation conditions for barotropic Rossby waves. In the present study the spatial patterns of the leading modes of variability in the Northern Hemisphere are shown to change in response to the enhanced GHG forcing. However, this change is not associated with any changes in the propagation conditions for barotropic Rossby waves. The seemingly conflicting results are discussed.
