The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry’s (ATSDR) top priority at the Cayuga County Groundwater Contamination site (Site) is to ensure that the community has the best information possible about how contaminants in soil vapor might affect their health. The NYSDOH requested that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 collect data to evaluate the soil vapor intrusion pathway at this site. This health consult is a review of those data. In June 2009, EPA began a soil vapor intrusion investigation at the Cayuga County Groundwater Contamination site. During the course of the investigation (June 2009 through January 2011), EPA collected soil vapor intrusion samples from 53 homes. These sample results were evaluated and are the basis for the conclusions and recommendations presented in this document by NYSDOH and ATSDR.
