O’Sullivan’s Island (the site) comprises the southwestern portion of a peninsula located in Derby, CT, where the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers join together. From the 1950s until 2000, the northern portion of the site was used for fire training by the Valley Fire Training School. In 2007, the fire training buildings were demolished. Contaminants detected in soil in this portion of the site include petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), arsenic and lead.
