Sheep and Lamb Death Loss in the United States, 1999

Each January, USDAs National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collects sheep data on inventory, lamb crop, and total sheep and lamb death loss. Inventory and lamb crop estimates (number of head) are published in January. Sheep and lamb death loss estimates (number of head) are published in May via the Meat Animals: Production, Disposition and Income report. For NASSs January 1995 and 2000 sheep surveys, USDAs Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) provided funding for a detailed, retrospective breakdown of total sheep and lamb losses by producer-attributed cause of loss occurring during the previous year. Only death losses by predator causes were estimated and published by NASS for losses in 1999. This report provides a breakdown of sheep and lamb death losses in 1999 for all causes by size group and region, with special emphasis on nonpredator causes of loss. Where possible, the 1994 death losses are provided for comparison.
