The overarching purpose of this analysis of datasets was to identify key risk and protective factors related to adolescent involvement in self-directed and interpersonal violence. This research included ongoing interactions with key community partners who were integral to the identification of key researchable questions as well as examination of the implications of results for direct applications to programs, policies and practice. While the domain of risk factors for youth involvement in violence has been extensively researched utilizing both clinical and population-based datasets, relatively less is known about key protective factors that buffer against and diminish the likelihood of young people's involvement in violence. Our interest in protective factors focused particularly on the identification of robust, cross-cutting protective factors that appeared to have a protective effect for many or all social groups of young people examined, across delimiters of race, ethnicity, gender social class and geography.
