Indicatori e Modelli per la Gestione e il Monitoraggio delle Acque Superficiali (Indicators and Models for Managing and Monitoring Surface Waters).

A sound policy for managing water resources must be based on the correct knowledge of environment and ecosystems. An integrated approach is essential in order to reach this multidisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge. Contributions from biologists, naturalists, chemists, engineers and economists are needed. This report describes a concrete application of the integrated approach carried out by the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (the Italian National Institute of Health) and the Assessorship for the Environment of Viterbo Province (Latium). During the project many aspects of the management and protection of water resources were addressed: the development of an index of Potential Non-Point Pollution (PNPI) allowed the assessment of diffuse sources, the Fluvial Functioning Index (FFI) gave the possibility of identifying fragilities of the fluvial ecosystems. Other activities, such as the application to a pilot river basin of SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) and the study of the ornithic community, had a more experimental quality. In particular, knowledge of the ornithic fauna contributed to the study on biodiversity. At last, guidelines for an economic analysis were defined in order to reach the reclamation objectives, using for example the 'cost-benefit' analyses.
