This volume provides the ground for medical and nursing teams to self-assess their communication skills with cancer patients. This first draft will benefit from any contribution health workers will make available. This handbook is composed of two parts. The first part is articulated into 20 frames, or fundamental issues in communication, related also to the organizational environment where it takes place. Each frame has an aim (expected impact on patients and their relatives) and a number of specific criteria. The reader will assess criteria and aims on a 5 level scale. Examples are associated to a number of criteria. In each frame, the different areas of communication are examined in every aspect of disease. that patients consider essential to support good communication during the steps of disease . Selfassessment should be done by the whole care giving team and should include all criteria as well as a comprehensive overview of the process. The second part of this handbook examines in a relational outlook the ethical, organizational, psychological and normative aspects of the communication with the oncological patients and their families.
