Future of Emergency Care: Hospital-Based Emergency Care: At the Breaking Point.

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on the Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System was formed in September 2003 to examine the emergency care system in the United States; explore its strengths, limitations, and future challenges; describe a desired vision of the system; and recommend strategies for achieving that vision. The committee was also tasked with taking a focused look at the state of pediatric emergency care, pre-hospital emergency care, and hospital-based emergency and trauma care. This is the third of three reports presenting the committee’s findings and recommendations in these three areas. Summarized below are the committee’s findings and recommendations for meeting the challenge of high demand for emergency care and achieving the vision of a 21st-century emergency care system.
