Malaria is still the most common imported disease in Italy. After the constant rise recorded in the last decades (1990-1999), the number of imported malaria cases declined in the years 2000 and 2001. In the present paper the epidemiology of imported malaria during the period 2002-2006 are reported and discussed. 3,354 malaria cases are confirmed, 974 (29.0%) of which among Italians and 2,380 (71.0%) among foreigners. Most of the cases were contracted in Africa (94%); P. falciparum accounted for about 85% of all imported cases, with a lethality rate of 0.6%. In the study period a constant decrease of the imported cases was confirmed, the mortality remained stable and below the European average.
