Fine Particle Emissions from Biomass and Heavy Fuel Oil Combustion without Effective Filtration (BIOPOR)

The atmospheric emissions from small to medium size district heating units (4.15 MW), operating either on heavy fuel oil or on woody biomass fuel, were investigated. In addition, the effects of a wet flue gas scrubber and an electrostatic precipitator on particle emissions from wood fired heating units were examined. Two of the wood fired heating units were rotating grate boilers and one a gasification combustion boiler. The measurements included determinations of particle mass concentrations and particle number concentrations as a function of particle size, and extensive analyses on particle chemical composition.
