摘要

These supplementary tables present detailed trends in income and employment for Appalachia; its northern, central, and southern subregions; and the portion of the United States outside of Appalachia. They also show comparative trends for other historically poor regions of the country: the Mississippi Delta, the Ozark Mountain region, and the Rio Grande Valley. Economic conditions in each of these regions have improved dramatically during the past 40 years, indicating that the convergence in income and employment (which we discuss in the main report) has not been limited to the Appalachian region. The base population totals used in these tables came from 1960 through 2000 census data from the National Historical Geographical Information System (NHGIS). We applied these base totals to the percentages obtained from the Census Bureaus internal long-form data files from 1960 to 2000 to obtain the numbers behind these percentages. These numbers have been rounded to the nearest thousand.
