This workshop was organized by the Study Group Innovative Therapies and Natural Substances (TISNa) of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS). The primary goal of the workshop was to provide a scientific forum to discuss the recent progresses in different research fields on the natural substances and the impact of their large use on public health. Numerous researchers working in different Departments and Centres of ISS contributed to this meeting, with their competences in different research fields. Special attention was turned to the pharmacological activity and the mechanisms of action of some substances of vegetable and animal origin. Then the regulatory, clinical and ethical aspects were faced.
