Wildlife-Vehicle Collision and Crossing Mitigation Measures: A Literature for Parks Canada Kootenay National Park

The report reviews mitigation measures aimed at reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) and at maintaining or improving habitat connectivity for wildlife. This review represents the first task of a project that aims to identify, prioritize, and develop a highway mitigation plan for Highway 93 South in Kootenay National Park and adjacent road sections the mitigation measures reviewed are aimed at either influencing driver behavior or animal movements with regard to large mammals and mammals that are of conservation concern. For each mitigation measure the report includes a general description of the measure, species that may benefit from the measure, the effectiveness of the mitigation measure in terms of reducing WVCs, examples of studies examining the effectiveness of the mitigation measure in terms of reducing WVCs, the effectiveness of the mitigation measure in terms of reducing the barrier effect of roads and traffic, potential disadvantages or undesired side effects of the measure, maintenance requirements of the mitigation measure, and the range of costs for construction, installation and/or maintenance of the mitigation measure, if available. The authors of this report consider animal distraction systems and wildlife fencing, in combination with animal detection systems and wildlife underpasses and overpasses, to be potential primary mitigation measures that should be considered for the reduction of WVCs along Hwy 93 South through Kootenay National Park and adjacent road sections.
