On December 11, 2008 the New Zealand Minister of Energy, Gerry Brownlee, announced that he had tabled a bill in Parliament that would repeal the requirement that oil companies in New Zealand blend a certain proportion of their gasoline and diesel with biofuel. Some in New Zealand believe that this will slow the nation's progress toward self sufficiency in transport fuels and increase the debt the nation faces for greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
