King Rail (Rallus elegans) Conservation Plan. Version 1

The main topics of discussion at the November 2006 King Rail Workshop were developing population objectives, identifying research and monitoring priorities, and developing conservation and management strategies. These subjects form the backbone of the plan. Population objectives were difficult to define due to the lack of historic population data for the King Rail. However, a regional approach, using regions delineated by the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, is presented as a means for establishing population objectives. Research and monitoring are essential for future King Rail conservation efforts because we lack considerable information on habitat requirements and limiting factors for the species. Habitat conservation and management are essential for maintaining viable King Rail populations throughout its range. Initial conservation efforts should be focused in high priority landscapes and integrated with one another using a Strategic Habitat Conservation (SHC) approach (NEAT 2006). SHC is an adaptive process that ties together the planning, implementation, and evaluation phases of habitat conservation.
