Skin testing for studies undertaken by CARE will be performed at time(s) indicated by the specific protocol. The information obtained from skin testing will be used in conjunction with the child's allergy history data and the data collected on the patient's home environment to determine the probable role of allergy in the child's asthma. The results of skin testing may also contribute to the recommendations made to the child's caretaker for environmental control measures. Skin testing will not be performed on any patient who has experienced an anaphylactic reaction to prior skin testing. In addition, skin testing to a specific food will not be performed if the patient has food-induced anaphylaxis to that food. In these situations, serum will be obtained for CAP/FEIA testing. Skin testing should not be performed on any subject with active asthma. CAP/FEIA testing may be performed or the subject could return for skin testing at another time when asthma is in control. Subjects unable to withdraw antihistamines (i.e., uncontrolled or potentially worsening eczema) should have CAP/FEIA testing done instead of skin testing.
