From April through June 200 we traveled to and visted the successful herring enhancement program in Akkeshi, Japan. We also conducted studies at the Alaska SeaLife Center and the Seward Shellfish Hatchery to provide a preliminary evaluation of the potential to culture Pacific herring for possible stock supplementation in Prince William Sound. Our objectives were focused on determining: (1) the specific effects of salinity on fertilization and hatching success in PWS herring, (2) the effects of the timing of food availability on larval growth and survival, (3) if calcium sensing receptor proteins were expressed in the tissues of larval and finally (4) establishing a scientific collaboration with the Hokkaido National Fisheries Research Institute for the exchange of technology and methods related to herring stock supplementation in Japan.
