Generic Safety Issue 191 (GSI)-191, 'Assessment of Debris Accumulation on PWR Sump Performance,' was established to assess the potential for debris transport and accumulation of debris generated during a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) to impede or degrade emergency core cooling system (ECCS) performance in operating commercial pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 2004-02, 'Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation During Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors (PWRs).' on September 13, 2004, as the primary vehicle for addressing and resolving concerns associated with GSI-191.
