Assistance to people with diabetes will go through important changes in Italy. The qualitative survey with focus group was aimed to explore the views of people with diabetes, relatives and professionals on the adequacy of the new care model and the information needs. The results draw the characteristics of the 'ideal care model' that meets the expectations of people involved. Among the most cited there are the systems efficiency, timeliness of diagnosis and health care interventions, financial and geographical accessibility, skills of health professionals, care of the person in his/her systemic dimension based on appropriate communication and interpersonal interactions. The information needs include either the various aspects of the disease and the expected advantages and disadvantages of disease management, thus allowing people to make an informed choice. The results will be used to design an information campaign.
