In the Old Fort Lowell, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) top priority is to ensure that the local residents have the best information possible to safeguard their health. The City of Tucson officials had planned to redevelop the site as a recreational park. The initial soil sampling results indicated elevated levels of lead, arsenic and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. ADHS was asked to perform a health consultation to evaluate whether exposure to contaminants in soil will harm people's health, either currently or during possible future reuse of the land.
