Health Consultation: F/V Mar-Gun Grounding, St. George Island, Alaska, July 7, 2010

The Environmental Public Health Programs (EPHP) top priority is to ensure that residents of St. George Island have sufficient information to safeguard their health. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) asked EPHP to conduct this health consultation. The purpose of the consultation was to evaluate the public health risk of eating shellfish that may have come in contact with petroleum contaminants from a fishing vessel, the F/V Mar-Gun, that ran aground in March 2009. An unknown amount of diesel fuel spilled into the water and onto the beach. Shellfish are a subsistence resource for local residents.
