All cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada combined totaled 106.7 million head on January 1, 2010, down 1 percent from the 107.7 million on January 1, 2009. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 45.9 million head, were down 2 percent from a year ago. All sheep and lambs in the U.S. and Canada combined totaled 6.44 million head on January 1, 2010, down 2 percent from the 6.56 million on January 1, 2009. Breeding sheep, at 4.81 million head, were down 1 percent from a year ago and market sheep and lambs, at 1.63 million head, were down 3 percent from last year.
