This manual is meant to be a helpful source of information during scheduled Ecosystems and Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) cruises. Since it is not reasonable to expect everyone to remember every aspect of the gear and sampling procedures performed at sea, this manual serves as a quick reference to answer some of the more common questions that arise. It is also our hope that this manual will help to standardize the way in which samples are taken, labeled, preserved, etc. The EcoFOCI Field Manual is intended to augment the Cruise Instructions provided to the scientists and the crew of the research vessel. The sample requester and the Chief Scientist will provide instructions for special samples or experiments. This manual has been designed for operations aboard NOAA vessels and slight modification to some of the procedures may be necessary when using the manual aboard other vessels. The EcoFOCI manual also contains information pertaining to the Cruise Operations Database (COD) and tips on how to code certain sampling scenarios.
