Evaluate New Materials for Deepwater Synthetic Mooring Systems. Final Report

The purpose of this report is to show the application of advanced fibers such as PEN, aramid, LCP and HMPE to the mooring of deepwater floating production systems (FPS) and Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU), where polyester fiber ropes have been almost exclusively used to date. In this report the authors compare and contrast - with polyester - some advanced fiber materials for use in construction of a deepwater synthetic mooring system. The term advanced fiber generally refers to improved thermal, chemical and mechanical properties with higher-modulus stiffer fibers than polyester. Advanced materials evaluated include, for instance, aramids, HMPE and, PEN.
