Kentucky Bridges High-Strength Quenched and Tempered Steel

This project will: (1) determine when high-strength quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels were first employed on bridges in the U.S. Review the evolution of the ASTM/AASHTO standard steels; (2) identify previous problems encountered with those steels including low toughness, susceptibility to weld cracking and stress corrosion/hydrogen stress cracking, and (3) provide the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) with a list of bridges containing Q & T steel along with recommendations/guidelines for follow-on investigations, inspections and testing to preclude the presence of defective material or potential problematic details/issues.
