Contexts of Racial Socialization: Are Transracial Adoptive Families More Like Multiracial or White Monoracial Families

Although the practice of transracial adoption, that is, the adoption of a non-white child by White parents, has existed for over fifty years, over the past generation there has been a large overall increase in the transracial adoption of children born both in the United States and abroad. Data from Census 2000 estimated that about one in six adopted children is of a different race than their parent, making the adoption a more visible family form.
