This document presents the ninth annual report on mortality statistics, relating to the calendar year 1908. The report covers a larger proportion of the total population of continental United States than ever before. The registration area for the year includes 17 states, the District of Columbia, and 74 registration cities in states not yet possessing satisfactory systems of state registration. The aggregate estimated population represented is 45,028,767, which is 51.8 per cent of the total estimated population of the country. The total number of deaths registered and returned from this area is 691,574, corresponding to a death rate of 15.4 per 1,000 of population and indicating a remarkably favorable condition of the public health.
