Report on Radiographic Tests on XF4U-1 Engine Mount, SAE 4340 Steel

Welded joints in an XF4U-1 aircraft engine mount made of 4340 SAE steel were radiographed using both x-ray and gamma-ray methods, to test the applicability of the-latter method to inspection of tubing welds. Radiographs obtained showed that most of the defects and detail in the radiographs can also be found in the gamma radiographs, but the latter lack the definition required to indicate fine porosity in the weld beads. Lack of penetration of weld metal into spaces between welded parts was often noted.
