EFFECTIVENESS OF PHOTOFLASH LAMPS FOR DESTROYING DARK ADAPTATION

Blinding times for dark adapted observers were measured for a flash produced by a bank of 25 No. 50 photoflash bulbs. The target under observation was a tail view silhouette of a bomber against night skies of different brightnesses. Distances to flash and also to target of 300, 150, and 75 yards were used. For a clear starlit night sky blinding times were less than a second for a flash at 300 yards for all three target distances and for darker skies and shorter distances to the flash the times were longer.
