The problem of the production of airtight glass and metal unions is one of the most important in the technique of high vacuums. It depends primarily on a complete mastery of the technique of glass and metal welding and preservation of a completely airtight joint or a joint which will maintain the chosen gas in a bulb. The oldest and best-known metal for this purpose is of course platinum. With improvements in the technique of the glass and metal welding, however, due mainly to the high cost of the metal named, various substitute materials have been tried, such as nickel-steel, platinum plated wire, copper plated wire, and others.
