The tube was believed to have ruptured because of the presence of tome obstruction in the bore at the time of firing. Since calculations indicate that even if the projectile was stopped at the muzzle the action of gas pressure alone would fail to give a bursting pressure, the projectile, apparently wedged by the obstruction, forced the barrel wall to bulge and then burst.
