摘要

On the basis of well-known physico-chemical properties of bleed, it has been calculated that the addition of fixed acid to blood in sitro under conditions where gas exchange is prevented should produce extensive increase in H ion concentration and CO2 tension with little change in bioarbonate content.nAnalysis if available experimental data reveals that changes resembling the above type occur in vivo in conditions of metabolic acidosis in which respiratory compensation is delayed or prevented.nSimilar calculations reveal that the addition of NaHCO3 to blood should produce marked increases in CO2 tension with only mild decreases in H ion concentration.nChanges of the above type should occur transiently in vivo following the intravenous injection of NaHCO3, and according to the multiple factor theory should result in a transient hyperpnea followed by a slight depression of respiration.
