REPORT OF TEST OF FOUR RODEL AN/CRT-4 DIRECTIONAL RADIO SONO BUOYS

The Model AN/CRT-4 Directional Radio Sono Buoy is a self contained miniature radio transmitter. This buoy when launched from an aircraft into water not only detects under water sounds, but also transmits to the airplane the direction of the sound source from the buoy. The frequency range is adjustable from 62.9 to 71.7 mc. Four production buoys were sent to the Naval Research Laboratory for a series of electrical tests; complete tests had been conducted previously and reported in reference (3). The overall electrical performance of these units is considered satisfactory with the exceptions set forth in paragraphs 3 through 22. The nest serious defect is the tendency of the buoys to super-regenerate. (Paragraph 23) This should be corrected as set forth in paragraph 29.
