This report is a monograph on German research and industrial practice in the field of Liquid Phase High Pressure Hydrogenation of Carbonaceous Matter. Although used, primarily as a first step in the production of gasoline, the process is versatile and permits the manufacture of heavy oils, middle oils (fuel oils), briquetting agents, pitch substitutes for the production of electrode coke, etc. A survey is made of the history of the process, effect of various conditions and catalysts, theoretical considerations, plant practice, methods of operation, standard plant design, methods of analysis.
