摘要

This 1947 technical bulletin reports the status of treatment for thrombosis in the veins of the legs. A thorough discussion of the diagnosis of venous thrombosis is presented, together with a brief description of the symptoms of pulmonary embolism, which may first call attention to thrombosis of the legs. Both prophylactic and definitive treatments are detailed. Prophylaxis includes use of semi-elastic bandages, avoidance of body positions which are provacative of thrombosis, active exercise of the legs, section of the femoral vein, and use of anticoagulants. Definitive treatment emphasizes anticoagulants as the treatment of choice when the problem is temporary; surgical section is preferred when the cause is continuing and when prevention of further embolism is of paramount importance. Anticoagulants heparin and dicumarol are thoroughly described. Operative procedures such as section of the femoral vein, exploration of the common femoral vein, lumbar sympathetic block, interruption above the inguinal ligament, and vena caval ligation are outlined. Fourteen articles are included in the bibliography.
