The Diagnosis of Acute and Chronic External Otitis

Chronic forms of external otitis should be studied bacteriologically and fungiologically to determine the course of treatment. Where bacteria or fungi are found, treatment with metacresyl acetate or sulfanilamide-urea-glycerine solution can be used to control them. The eczematoid and seborrheic group responds to local applications of the mild tar ointments in a zinc oxide base, to ichthyol-calamine-zinc oxide ointment combinations or to the application of calamine lotion. The allergic group often requires detective work by both physician and patient to find the causative agents. Foods and drugs, as well as industrial materials with which the patient comes in contact, must be considered. A bibliography of 8 items is included.
