EVALUATION OF NORTH CAROLINA RAW MATERIALS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PORTLAND CEMENT Ⅱ.Small-Scale Production of Portland Cement

Cement meeting all A.S.T.M. specifications for normal (Type I) Portland cement has been produced using a quarry materials limestone and shale from Eastern North Carolina. The limestone was from a quarry in Belgrade and was beneficiated by flotation before use. The shale was from Durham and is typical of those found throughout the Deep River area. Firing of the limestone-shale mixture was carried out in a small rotary kiln similar in principle to commercial cement kilns.nWork carried out with other native limestones indicates that several of these may be used directly in cement manufacture without need of initial purification. Considerable discussion is given regarding the location and composition of the numerous limestone and shale deposits examined. It is concluded that satisfactory raw materials are available over a wide area of Eastern North Carolina.nReference is made to some of the technical and economic fea¬tures involved in cement production. The potential importance of the current development of a coal mine in the region of the shale deposits is pointed out.nThe establishment of a cement mill within North Carolina using local raw materials is deemed to be worthy of serious con¬sideration on the basis of the results reported here.
