Boron chloride reacts with lithium hydride in ethyl ether in the absence of catalysts to yield 70-77% of theory of diborane.nBoron chloride gas passed into a slurry of lithium hydride in ethyl ether yields diborane of high purity. When previously made boron chloride ethyl etherate is used the first diborane collected is of somewhat low purity. Boron chloride dioxanate may be used as a source of boron provided ethyl ether is used as the slurrying agent for lithium hydride. When diozane was used as the slurrying agent a 0% yield of diborane was obtained.
