A Consideration of Certain Aspects of Blood Transfusions with Particular Reference to the Clinical Complications

This technical bulletin discusses blood transfusions and clinical complications which can occur. A historical introduction begins the paper. Certain aspects of blood transfusions are considered with detailed reference to possible complications and their treatment. Among the complications discussed are: air embolisms, pyrogenic reactions, hypersensitivity causing urticarial reactions, circulatory failure and hemolytic reaction due to Rh sensitization. Circulatory failure and hemolytic reactions are among the most serious complications. It is emphasized that when a hemolytic reaction is associated with anuria, marked restriction of fluid intake during the eight to twelve day post-transfusion period is of utmost importance.
