Audiology - The Science of Hearing

This bulletin addresses the problem of hearing disabilities, particularly in service-connected cases. The Veterans Administration program is described. The basic concepts of audiology, the science of hearing, are discussed. Tests to measure hearing loss are listed. Although the restoration of hearing is the primary aim, less than ten percent of individuals with impaired hearing can be helped by medical or surgical means. Psychological counselling will usually be needed to help patients to adjust to their disability. After medical treatment is ruled out, selection of an electronic hearing aid is considered, and various kinds of aids are described. Auditory training in use of the hearing aid, speech or lip reading training, and speech conservation instruction are necessary. Audiology Units of various sizes are described. A bibliography of 16 references is included.
