Earth has been used for many thousands of years in one form or another and in nearly every corner of the world as a material in the construction of housing. Structures used by the settlers in the west consisted of building up piles of successive layers of matted sod. This method obviously produced only crude structures. Earth construction in modern days, because of a critical shortage of housing, has becomes such a popular method of building in the southwest portion of the united states that building code requirements for factors such as strength, ability to weather in periods of wetting and drying, freezing and thawing, insect and vermin resistance, insulation qualities, water absorbency, and shrinkage, shall in the future be necessary to assure safe and economical building construction.
