A Compact, Water-Cooled Carbon Arc Source For Infrared Spectroscopy

The original carbon arc infrared source was an obsolescent motion picture projector modified in a simple manner to adapt it for use m absorption spectroscopy. Encouraging results with this source, which is still in daily use at this laboratory, led to the construction of a second modified projector source for use with the 100 foot Hopkins absorption cell3. This arc is enclosed n an inert atmosphere at low pressure to eliminate infrared absorption by H2O and CO2, a mode of operation which gives a lower positive crater temperature than the open air arc. It is likewise in continual use. A smaller s zed incandescent tungsten source has since been devised to accomplish the same ends4.
