A Research Study for Development of Specifications for Military Procurement

A research study has been conducted on laminated wood shoe lasts for the Research and Development Division, Office of the Quartermaster General by the State University of New York, College of Forestry, Syracuse. The study included such variables as type of adhesives suitable for laminating lasts, evaluation of hard maple and beech, method of lay-up of components, special construction features such as rivet pins, thickness of laminates, and method of testing.nLaminates of 4/4, 6/4, and 8/4 maple, and 4/4 beech were glued with eight adhesives and subjected to three conditions of exposure. The performance of vertically and horizontally laminated lasts of maple and beech glued with var¬ious adhesives were compared with solid lasts in the following tests:n1. Turning and finishing propertiesn2. Impact strength in heel sections with and without rivet pinsn3. Relative degree of dimensional stabilityn4. Resistance to checking in steaming operationsn5. Relative durability under various exposure conditions
