The application of the klystron amplifier to phase modulation has been discussed in several popular texts. By extending these techniques it is shown that an electronic phase-shifter giving satisfactory performance for certain applications may be obtained. With a presently available tube type, shifts of sev¬eral hundred degrees can be obtained with substantially uniform response.nA brief review of the amplifier theory is presented and the relationship between the applied voltage variation and resultant phase shift developed. Experimental results on a popular tube correlate well with the theory. It is possible that the characteristics of this type of phase shifter can be improved by increasing the drift time by either lowering the applied voltage or lengthening the drift space.
