EFFECT OF HARDNESS ON THE LEVEL OF THE IMPACT ENERGY CURVE FOR TEMPER BRITTLE AND UNEMBRITTLED STEEL (Twentieth Partial Report on Temper Brittleness)
Specimen blanks of martensitic SAE 3140 steel were tempered for short times at several temperatures between 500 and 675°C to give various hardnesses ranging from Rockwell C 20 2/1 to C 38. Comparisons of energy levels in the V-notched Charpy test were made at 200°C above the tempera-ture of transition from ductile to brittle failure.
