An analytical treatment of two-terminal oscillators is begun in this report. The analysis is based on a Fourier series representation in which the nonlinear negative resistance characteristic is approximated by means of straight-line segments. Instead of assuming the characteristics to be nearly linear the oscillation is assumed to be nearly sinusoidal. In the case of a series-mode oscillator this assumption implies a sinusoidal cur¬rent which permits the voltage to be expressed as a Fourier series. The ratio of the fundamental component of voltage to the fundamental component of current is the effective input resistance which, when considered as a function of the current amplitude, permits the amplitude of oscillation to be determined for a specified external circuit.
