摘要

In presenting a brief historical introduction to a discussion of infrared atomic spectra it is pointed out that present-day emphasis on the utilization of infrared tech¬niques for an attack on molecular problems actually came into being dur¬ing the immediately preceding generation, and that precise techniques of infrared observation were developed in the first place for the study of atomic spectra. This story is told in most interesting fashion by Pro¬fessor H. M. Randall in his Ives medal address carried in the February .1954 number of the Journal of the Optical Society of America(1)#. In the very beginning infrared experimentation was nurtured and reared in the capable hands of a few great masters of the laboratory arts, in¬cluding Rubens, Langley, and Coblentz. This was the age, around the turn of the century, when hand-built instrumentation was approaching its highest development; it was the age of the Thomson astatic galvanometer, of the linear thermopile, of the rocksalt prism.
