Family Income in the United States: 1952. Consumer Income. Current Population Reports.

The median (average) family income in the United States was estimated at $3,900 in 1952 or $200 higher than in 1951, according to figures released by Robert W. Burgess, Director, Bureau of the Census, Department of Commerce. This increase represented only a slight gain in purchasing power for the average family, however, since prices had also increased somewhat during this period, according to the Consumers' Price Index. Over 13 million families in the United States received money incomes of $5,000 or more in 1958, but 8 million had incomes under $2,000. The remaining 20 million families were in the $2,000-to-$5,000 range.
