A method of studying the oxidation behavior of metals has been de¬veloped where the metal sample is subjected to a linear temperature in-crease at constant oxygen pressure. The advantages of this method over previous isothermal menhods are that (1) a rapid preliminary examination of the oxidation behavior of any metal or alloy over any temperature and pressure range can be quickly made, (2) the region of pressure dependence can usually be found in a single experiment, and (3) the number of samples needed is greatly reduced.nThe linear temperature increase method was applied to the metals Ta. Nb, Mo, Cu, Zr, Mg, Ti, and W. The results are in good agreement with those of previous investigations made in this laboratory.nTheoretical considerations show that the results could be explain¬ed by imposing the conditions of a linear temperature increase on a gen¬eral type rate equation.
